Classroom environments

Our aim is always to build independence and confidence, ensuring every child can thrive within the wider school community.

We use The Zones of Regulation consistently throughout school to support emotional wellbeing. Emotional literacy activities are embedded into daily practice to help children understand and manage their feelings.

Visual support plays a key role in our provision. Every classroom has a visual timetable, and some pupils also use:

  • Individual visual timetables
  • “Now and Next” boards
  • “Working Towards” boards

Staff use additional visual prompts and simple signs to support communication and accessibility for all learners

At Atherton St George’s, inclusion is central to everything we do.

The Learning Lab is our specialist SEND provision, available to pupils of Atherton St George’s where this is deemed appropriate based on their level of need, professional assessments, and guidance from external agencies.

Places within The Learning Lab are limited to ensure a small, nurturing environment where children receive highly personalised support. Admission to the provision is carefully considered in partnership with families and external professionals to ensure the setting is appropriate for each child’s individual needs.

All classrooms across Atherton St George’s follow a communication-friendly approach designed to support understanding, reduce anxiety and promote confidence. Each classroom includes a designated Safe Space, providing children with a calm area to regulate emotions when needed.

Within The Learning Lab, we offer:

  • Small group teaching with low pupil numbers
  • A nurturing, adapted curriculum tailored to individual needs
  • Structured support to develop emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Carefully planned transitions back into mainstream classrooms where appropriate
